I ordered this with a bit of trepidation. I am a huge Captain Marvel fan and Mego collector, so I knew I was going to buy it but looking at that picture I was prepared to be disappointed. It looks like the head was huge compared to the body, and unbalanced.

When it finally arrived, I was happy to discover that they had fixed the problems with the production model, and delivered a very cool figure. No colossal noggin here.

The DC Retro Action Shazam is exactly the same height as the old Mego Shazam (I compared them) but in a much different style. The old Mego Shazam was modeled on Jackson Boswick who played Captain Marvel for the "Shazam" TV show, while the Retro Action figure is modeled on the comic book Captain Marvel.

His costume is the one seen on most figures nowadays; a blend of the original Golden Age costume mixed with Alex Ross's scheme of "paint all the yellow parts gold." I guess you could say that this is the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Beats the original Mego, May 19, 2011

Mattel manages to release not only a nice wave of characters well constructed, but actually improves upon the original Mego Shazam. Opting for the classic gold look enhances the figure measurably. Balance that with a well detailed cape and stylized head sculpt (reminiscent of the classic comics) and you have a real keeper here. Great work Mattel!

I grew up with the Mego World's Greatest Super-heroes. They were my favorite action figures. They even trumped G.I. Joe (12 inch) and Big Jim in my book. While those other two lines may have had better and more detailed sets, accessories, and vehicles, the Mego figures themselves were always the greatest. And they still are. As I grew up, the toys faded away, replaced largely by suddenly-not-so-icky girls. But as the BIG THREE - O approached, I started yearning for those simpler times. The toys and comics I abandoned with such fickle disregard in burgeoning adolescence were calling to me again. And I steadily re-built my collections, the most cherished part of which was the WGSH series. I did a pretty good job of it, too, getting all the figures I'd had as a kid, and adding a few more to boot ( and at no small expense). Layoffs and other grown-up stuff intruded, and I had to sell off my reformed plastic band of heroes and villains. But now Mattel has flown to the rescue, re-issuing... Read more
